A look at this suburban fridge reveals much about its owners. At first glance; something that is very obvious about this fridge is the many sparsely filled shelves. The freezer has large shelves that are almost completely empty and the freezer door storage has only one product in it. In addition to this, the main part of the fridge has a rather large shelf that is only stocked with one item. The fridge’s emptiness implies that there are few people who us this fridge. Fuller households tend to have fridges that are filled to capacity. The sparseness of this fridge suggests that this fridge only caters to two people, or maybe even only one. From looking at the contents of this fridge, it can also be concluded that the owners often cook. The door storage of the fridge is filled with many condiments and ingredient type foods that someone would not eat alone. The freezer’s contents further imply this. Rather than having frozen pizzas and chicken nuggets, the freezer contains peas and other frozen vegetables. These frozen foods are likely used as additional ingredients in home cooked meals, rather than being meals themselves.Much like the women of the 50’s in Laura Shapiro’s Something From the Oven, it is plausible this frozen produce is used as shortcut products for the “very specific reasons that had to do with the needs of the day and the dish”(50). In addition to this, the fridge also has multiple Tupperware containers filled with what appear to be home cooked meals, even further enforcing that the fridge’s owners often cook. The fridge can also show the owner’s age. The bottom shelf of the fridge is filled with beers and there are bottles of wine visible in the middle shelves. This implies that the fridge belongs to people over the age of 21. The food in the fridge can also reveal the owners personality. The contents of the fridge are notably lacking any sort of meat. This could mean that the fridge owners are vegetarians. The fridge is also filled with healthy food such as coconut water, vegetables and eggs. According to Rachel Hertz inThat’s Disgusting many consider people who eat “”unhealthy” high-fat diets as being less kind and considerate than people who are described as eating “healthy” vegetarian diet.” (16). It can then be assumed that the owners of the fridge are thoughtful people because of the fridge's healthy and meat-free foods,
The contents of one’s fridge can show people a window into who they are. This particular fridge makes us believe its owners to be few in number, kind, over 21 year old vegetarians who often cook their meals. While it is not for certain that these all attributes are true, it is highly likely that at least one of these traits holds true.
